This area is the heart of the nation's fishing industry. It is also the home of Fisherman's Birthday Celebrations with boat racing and aquatic sporting activities.

The area was known as the L' anse French for the bay. if one is walking in Gouyave toward the north the entire area to your left was not inhabited until the early 1900's exposing the bay area.

The rest of the town was inundated with Guava and hence the name Gouyave or Goyave.
